Specialized English in Art and Design is a course intended for students of the fine and applied arts that aims to both build and reinforce students' confidence when discussing and writing about art and design in English. The course involves reading, writing, listening, and a significant amount of speaking on formal, conceptual, and practical topics related to art and design. Central to the course is inter-student communication and peer learning with particular emphasis placed on in-class work. In addition to that, students are expected to work independently to develop their command of English as it relates to their particular field of study, but will also be pushed to move out of their comfort zone. Intended for students with a minimum English level of B2 (upper-intermediate), this course culminates in a final presentation and the submission of a process journal, which account for a significant portion of the final grade.
A note on the course:
Over the course of the summer semester, we are going to be covering a range of topics and themes related to your particular field of study. Given that my background is primarily in the fine arts, however, I want to emphasize an important aspect of this course, namely that you should expect to learn as much (if not more) from your classmates as you will from me. For this reason, a lot of our in-class work will prioritize communicative activities and your active participation will be expected.
A note on the final project and assessment:
The final project for this course will consist of a ten-minute presentation in which you will present a thesis and back it up with evidence from history, contemporary practice, and your own work. Your “thesis” could deal with an aesthetic, technical, functional, or moral question in art and/or design (or indeed, a combination thereof). This presentation will be graded based on the range of grammatical structures employed, the general and subject-specific vocabulary, and the overall engagement.
Throughout the semester, I will be asking you to do your own research to develop your presentation which must cite at least five sources in the Chicago citation style (see link below). To that end, I am going to be asking you to keep a process journal. This could be a physical book or a digital notebook in which I will ask you to collect properly cited quotes and summaries of things you have read that are potentially relevant to your topic. This journal can also include notes from our classes, reflections on topics discussed, and anything else relevant to your learning. I will frequently be asking you to share something from your process journal with your classmates, and you should be making consistent entries (at least one a week). The last entry in your journal should be a reflection on your presentation and the process that went into its creation.

Minimum attendance: 9 lessons out of 12
Your final grade will be determined by the following factors:
In-class participation: 60%
Final presentation: 25%
Process Journal: 15%
